"Stewardship, Ministry, Tithing; I already do these things."
How many times have you heard someone say this in self-aggrandizement?  How about you?  Is your service"in trade" for bragging rights, a yardstick to "measure up" against as a peacock display of "holiness"?  In the readings and the Gospel, we see first, the depth of misery in the human condition which the fruit of ministry is meant to feed to satiety.
In the second reading we hear what the attitude and mindset of a true servant is.  In the Gospel, we see a true servant in action.
So if you already serve, measure yourself using the tools above.  Of what do you boast as you serve?
Do you hold back because others don't pull equally? Is the fruit you serve ripe, sweet and savory?  Or does it taste like ash, only enough to keep the ministry alive?
You will know for sure when the response is that of the Psalmist;  Joyful praise to God!
And, if you don't serve because you see some ministers as hypocritical servants, be careful.  At least they are trying.  You can't show anyone any better if you just sit in the pew.
